A Symbol Remembering Victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery
Real-Time Surveillance System Established to Prevent Damage
Haenam County in South Jeolla Province has completed the restoration work of the Statue of Peace installed in Haenam Park and has begun implementing comprehensive protection measures.
According to the county on the 17th, the Statue of Peace was erected in 2015 to remember the pain suffered by victims of the Japanese military’s wartime sexual slavery and to reflect on historical lessons. The statue was built through the voluntary participation and fundraising efforts of local civic groups, South Jeolla Province, Haenam County, and county residents.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the statue’s installation. Although the statue is made of bronze, the paint on the face had peeled off and the explanatory plaque had deteriorated over time, making restoration unavoidable.
Starting on September 9, the county carried out cleaning, repainting, and replacement of the explanatory plaque through a professional restoration company, completing the work by the end of last month. From this month, residents and visitors can now view the restored statue.
Taking the restoration as an opportunity, the county has strengthened regular inspections and, in cooperation with Haenam Police Station, is operating mobile CCTV cameras to prevent damage. Beginning next year, these will be replaced with fixed integrated surveillance CCTV, allowing for real-time monitoring and enhanced protection measures through the county’s integrated control center.
A county official stated, "The Statue of Peace is a precious symbol that embodies the history of Haenam and the will of its residents," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to ensure ongoing management through regular inspections and restoration." The official also said, "We hope that with the mature civic consciousness of our residents, the Statue of Peace will remain a space that is remembered and respected for a long time to come."
