Prime Minister Kim Minseok stated, "The energy highway being pursued by the government will go beyond simply building transmission lines; it will serve as the main artery of the national economy and a foundation for growth for future generations."
In his opening remarks at the first meeting of the National Power Grid Expansion Committee held at the Government Seoul Building on October 1, Prime Minister Kim emphasized, "The power grid is a core infrastructure that supports the daily lives of our people and forms the basis of the nation's industrial competitiveness."

In accordance with the Special Act on Power Grids, the government has designated 99 projects for the construction of transmission lines and substations. By sector, these include power supply for advanced strategic industries (10 projects), connection of carbon-free sources such as renewable energy (73 projects), and construction of transmission lines and substations (16 projects). During the implementation process, special permitting provisions, expanded support for local residents, and joint construction of road and power grid social overhead capital (SOC) will be carried out in parallel.
Prime Minister Kim explained, "We are paving the way so that renewable energy electricity can be used reliably anywhere in the country, and creating an environment where companies can invest with confidence. Furthermore, by supplying the necessary power to advanced industries such as semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in a timely manner, we will enhance national competitiveness and contribute to balanced regional development."
Additionally, the government plans to complete the development and demonstration of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology by 2030, and then move forward with industrializing this technology for export.
The power authorities will operate an emergency response team and implement grid stabilization measures until around November 16, when power demand typically decreases in the fall.
The newly launched National Power Grid Expansion Committee is a pan-government public-private consultative body that includes the central government, metropolitan governments, and private sector experts. It will be responsible for technical reviews and building social consensus.
