"California with an Incompetent Governor Has Suffered a Major Blow"
Targeting Democratic Presidential Hopeful Newsom
Plan to Impose Tariffs on Imported Furniture
President Donald Trump of the United States announced on September 29 (local time) that he would impose a 100% tariff on all films produced abroad.
On this day, President Trump stated on his own social networking service, Truth Social, "Our film production industry has been stolen from America by other countries, just like taking candy from a baby," announcing this plan.
He added, "California, in particular, with its weak and incompetent governor, has suffered greatly," and explained, "Therefore, to resolve this long-standing and endless problem, I will impose a 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States."
Previously, in May, President Trump also declared that the American film industry was rapidly disappearing and that he would impose a 100% tariff on all films produced overseas. Recently, there has been a clear trend of American film production moving away from Hollywood to other regions that offer tax incentives. However, President Trump has yet to disclose specific details such as the criteria for the tariffs or when they would be implemented.
In particular, his mention of the California governor on this day is interpreted as a political attack targeting Gavin Newsom, the California governor who is considered a leading Democratic presidential contender. Los Angeles, California, which includes Hollywood, is a symbolic region for the American film industry. Previously, President Trump deployed the National Guard to suppress anti-immigration protests in Los Angeles, while Governor Newsom responded with lawsuits, and the two have continuously clashed over various issues.
On the same day, President Trump also announced in a separate post his intention to impose tariffs on imported furniture.
He stated, "We will impose significant tariffs on countries that do not manufacture furniture in the United States," explaining, "This is to make North Carolina, which has completely lost its furniture industry to China and other countries, great again." He added, "Detailed plans will be released soon."
On September 25, President Trump also announced plans to impose a 30% tariff on furniture such as sofas and chairs, and a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities.
