100 Million KRW and Plaque Awarded to Doctors Kang Dongwon and Jeon Jinkyung
13 Years of Medical Service in Underserved Areas of Zimbabwe
On September 24, the JW Lee Joungho Foundation, a public interest foundation of JW Pharmaceutical, held the '2025 JW Sungcheon Award Ceremony' at the JW headquarters in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. The foundation announced on the 25th that it awarded a prize of 100 million KRW and a plaque to Kang Dongwon, Head of the Zimbabwe branch of the Africa Future Foundation, and his spouse, Medical Director Jeon Jinkyung.

The JW Sungcheon Award was established in 2012 to honor the spirit of 'respect for life' embodied by the late Lee Joungho, Honorary Chairman of JW Pharmaceutical, and Sungcheon Lee Kisuk, the company's founder. The award aims to discover medical professionals who quietly dedicate themselves in the field, highlight their social value, and widely promote the philosophy of respect for life.
This year's recipients, the couple Kang Dongwon and Jeon Jinkyung, have been leading efforts to establish a self-sustaining medical system and protect children's lives in Zimbabwe for 13 years since their arrival in 2012. Both have served as full-time professors at the national medical university, training thousands of medical professionals and laying the foundation for capacity building among local medical staff by providing training opportunities in cooperation with medical institutions in Korea and abroad.
Professor Jeon has also treated children suffering from infectious diseases at the Sally Mugabe National Children's Hospital and local health centers, personally covering medical expenses for patients from extremely low-income backgrounds. Despite living with an autoimmune disease, Professor Kang has been known for his dedication to underserved areas, believing it to be a "calling from above."
In their acceptance speech, the two professors said, "We feel humbled, knowing that there are many who quietly dedicate themselves in even more difficult circumstances than ours, but we will accept the JW Sungcheon Award as encouragement and support for our mission." They added, "We will continue to live as 'true medical professionals who practice respect for life.'"
