9,000㎡ Wondang Intersection Transformed
Seasonal Colors Shine in New Green Landmark
On September 24, Uiseong County in North Gyeongsang Province announced that it has completed the construction of the "New Airport Landmark Urban Forest" in the area around the Wondang Intersection in Wondang-ri, Uiseong-eup (9,000㎡), which will serve as the gateway to the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport.
This project, converted to a provincial funding initiative, invested 450 million won to create an urban forest that combines green landscapes with artistic design along the ramp section of National Route 5 at Wondang Intersection. Uiseong County set the goal of delivering the first impression of a "Vibrant and Hopeful Uiseong" and strengthening the value of the local brand through this project.
◆ Spatial Beauty with Year-Round Color and Symbolism
The urban forest features symbolic plantings centered around pine trees, taking into account the intersection’s topography and the brief visual perception of passing vehicles. Additionally, more than 7,500 plants-including azaleas (spring, red and green), golden euonymus (year-round, yellow), and red photinia (year-round, red)-were planted in concentric circle patterns to offer different colors with each season.
Furthermore, mulching materials such as white pebbles and volcanic stones were used to improve maintenance efficiency and enhance the organized appearance. Uiseong County explained, "The design allows not only drivers passing by, but also those on airplanes taking off and landing, to appreciate the unique landscape from the sky."
◆ Establishing Itself as the 'Face of Uiseong' in the New Airport Era
Kim Jusu, Governor of Uiseong County, stated, "The New Airport Landmark Urban Forest will serve as Uiseong’s new gateway and the first impression for both residents and visitors. We will continue to expand green infrastructure to create a pleasant living environment."
With this project, the Wondang Intersection is gaining attention as a green landmark that not only functions as a transportation hub, but also showcases Uiseong County’s identity and future vision in the new airport era.
"This urban forest can be interpreted as a declarative space that demonstrates Uiseong’s aim to be more than just a supporting city for the new airport, but a sustainable, future-oriented green city. The symbolic landscape, visible from both sky and ground, is expected to further elevate Uiseong’s brand status."
