Gwangjin District in Seoul (District Mayor Kim Kyungho) announced on the 22nd that it has begun operating the Hwayang Community Support Center as of the 19th, aiming to enhance the daily convenience of its residents.
Hwayang-dong is an area densely populated with single-family and multi-family homes and has one of the highest proportions of young single-person households in Seoul. In response, the district remodeled the old closed-circuit television (CCTV) control center building to create a 92-square-meter space dedicated to providing public services closely tied to daily life.
The center offers free rentals of household appliances that were previously a financial burden to purchase, such as dehumidifiers, cordless vacuum cleaners, and steam irons. It also provides laundry services for blankets and curtains to recipients of the National Basic Livelihood Security Program and those in the lower-income bracket. Additionally, the center offers temporary parcel storage and supports minor home repairs-such as fixing lights, faucets, and showerheads-for single-person and vulnerable households. To ensure safety, the district has strengthened alley patrols and illegal dumping surveillance, and any hazardous facilities are reported to the relevant departments for management.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, stated, “Hwayang-dong has a high concentration of single-person households, so it requires public services that are differentiated from other areas. We will continue to do our best to make Gwangjin District a better place to live through tailored housing policies.”
Based on the success of the Hwayang Community Support Center, the district plans to expand the initiative to the Junggok-dong area as well. The Hwayang Community Support Center is located at 34 Gunja-ro and operates on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
