Selected for the Ministry of Land's "Hydrogen City Development Project"... 18.8 Billion Won Investment
Establishing a Full-Cycle System for Charging, Storage, Distribution, Inspection, and Maintenance
A "Hydrogen Energy Convergence Complex" equipped with not only hydrogen storage and distribution facilities, but also inspection and vehicle maintenance centers, will be established in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. Once the complex is completed, Ansan is expected to build a full-cycle system for hydrogen, from production to consumption, in connection with its existing hydrogen transportation hub.
On September 19, Ansan City announced that it has been selected for the "2026 Hydrogen City Development Project" organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
This project aims to create a "Hydrogen Energy Convergence Complex" by utilizing public land around Gongdan Samgeori in Wongsi-dong, Danwon-gu, which will be equipped with all the functions of hydrogen charging, storage, distribution, inspection, and maintenance.
With this selection, the city will first invest a total of 5 billion won, including 2.5 billion won in national funds and 2.5 billion won in municipal funds, to build hydrogen storage and distribution facilities with a capacity of 1.5 tons. Subsequently, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority will invest 8.8 billion won to establish a hydrogen vehicle pressure vessel inspection center, and 5 billion won in private investment will be attracted to set up a maintenance center dedicated to hydrogen electric vehicles.
The city plans to begin construction of the convergence complex next year and complete it by 2028.
The city explained that this project is significant as a "standard hydrogen city model" that can be applied even in the Seoul metropolitan area, where by-product hydrogen resources from petrochemical and steelmaking processes are scarce. Through this, it will be possible to realize a sustainable hydrogen city with a full-cycle management and safety system, regardless of local conditions.
In particular, once the hydrogen vessel inspection center is established, the city expects it will be able to inspect about 10,000 passenger cars and buses annually, absorbing inspection demand from neighboring municipalities as well.
Lee Minguen, Mayor of Ansan, stated, "The selection for this hydrogen city project is a second-phase initiative that supplements and expands on the achievements of the existing pilot city," adding, "We aim to enhance the brand value of 'H2 Economic City Ansan' and become Korea's leading hydrogen city."
