Special Private Park Project: Attracting 500 Billion Won in Private Investment,
Large-Scale Parks Completed in Succession
Pohang's Largest Green, Cultural, and Tourism Space
Realizing a Greener City for All Citizens
As the implementation of the Urban Park Sunset Law puts long-term unexecuted urban parks across the country at risk of being dismantled, Pohang City is preserving urban green spaces and creating new leisure and relaxation areas for citizens through a special private park project.
Pohang City is currently attracting 500 billion won in private capital to preserve parks while expanding leisure and sports infrastructure for citizens. The first achievement of this initiative, Hwanho Park, is scheduled to be completed by the end of September. The official opening is planned for October.
Hwanho Park is being developed across 1.14 million square meters in the Hwan-yeo, Duho, and Jangryang-dong areas of Buk-gu. Of this, 540,000 square meters in the southern section already house Space Walk and the Pohang Museum of Art, serving as familiar spaces for both citizens and tourists.
With the completion of a botanical garden, a lawn plaza, and other complex cultural and relaxation facilities on the northern 600,000 square meters, Pohang will have its only large-scale park exceeding 1 million square meters.
Accessibility and convenience have been enhanced with the installation of pedestrian bridges and a circular deck. The large lawn plaza, "Hwanho Field," is designed to provide families with a place to enjoy leisure and relaxation in the heart of the city.
In particular, the "Hwanho Park Botanical Garden" features a 130-meter-long arch-shaped greenhouse inspired by the sunrise, displaying rare tropical and subtropical plants such as baobab trees and mangroves, offering significant educational value. At night, landscape lighting on the botanical garden, circular deck, and ground fountain will create a striking nightscape, establishing the area as a leading nighttime tourist attraction in Pohang alongside Space Walk.
Following Hwanho Park, the city plans to complete Haksan Neighborhood Park (280,000 square meters) in Buk-gu in the first half of next year, and Sangsaeng Neighborhood Park (780,000 square meters) by the second half of 2027, thereby strengthening the urban green belt and expanding the foundation for citizens' sports activities.
A Pohang City official stated, "The special private park project is an example of achieving both green space preservation and urban development despite fiscal constraints," adding, "Starting with the completion of Hwanho Park, we will ensure the seamless construction of Haksan and Sangsaeng Parks, realizing a greener Pohang that all citizens can enjoy."
