Pukyong National University Exports Advanced Korean Aquaculture Technology to Tanzania

Professors and Aquaculture Experts Dispatched to Zanzibar

Pukyong National University (President Bae Sanghoon) is set to 'export' Korea's advanced aquaculture technology to Tanzania in Africa.

The Institute of International Cooperation for Marine and Fisheries Development at Pukyong National University (Director Park Wonkyu) announced on the 17th that it dispatched professors and other aquaculture experts to Zanzibar, Tanzania last August, where they held the "Tanzania Zanzibar Aquaculture Farm Capacity-Building Training Program" in the marine aquaculture zone.

Supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the seven-day training program was held from August 10 to 16. Twenty participants attended, including officials and technicians from the Zanzibar Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Zanzibar State University, and national and public research institutes.

Pukyong National University dispatched five aquaculture experts, including professors and researchers from the Busan Metropolitan City Fisheries Resources Research Institute, to directly transfer marine aquaculture techniques for crustaceans such as mud crabs, which are considered premium seafood products.

Although Tanzania is a coastal country, it lacks aquaculture infrastructure and technological capabilities, and is therefore seeking to develop its aquaculture industry through official development assistance projects and other initiatives.

Pukyong National University conducted an invitational training program last year as part of a three-year project to increase the production of high-value aquaculture species in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and followed up with on-site training this year. Next year, another invitational training program is planned.

Following the successful completion of the training program, Pukyong National University plans to continue supporting the development of aquaculture infrastructure by providing ongoing monitoring and feedback through a post-consulting team composed of experts who participated in the local training, and by working closely with the Zanzibar Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries.

Park Wonkyu, Director of the Institute of International Cooperation for Marine and Fisheries Development, emphasized, "We will take the lead in sharing Korea's advanced fisheries technology with the world by leveraging our specialized College of Fisheries Science, various research institutes, aquaculture-related laboratories and professionals, as well as our years of experience in official development assistance projects targeting Africa and Pacific island nations."
