Suspect Arrested for Demanding Money After Intentionally Causing Accidents
Gumi Police Station in North Gyeongsang Province (Superintendent Kim Dongwook) announced on the 16th that it had apprehended a man who intentionally collided with vehicles driven by drunk drivers and demanded money in exchange for covering up the incidents.
The man is suspected of seeking out targets in an alley lined with bars on August 11, then intentionally causing a collision while riding his motorcycle and demanding money as a settlement.
According to the police investigation, this man, who works as a quick delivery service driver, would look for vehicles operated by drunk drivers, intentionally cause traffic accidents using his motorcycle, and demand money as a settlement. When the victims were unable to pay the settlement, he would report the drunk driving accident to the police and exaggerate the extent of the damages in order to extort additional money.
Superintendent Kim Dongwook stated, "While drunk driving is wrong, exploiting this as leverage to extort money in exchange for covering up the incident is a reprehensible act that deserves social condemnation. We will conduct a thorough investigation."
