Joint Designation of Hydrogen-Specialized Complex and Full-Scale Cooperation Across the Hydrogen Industry Value Chain
Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province has embarked on a strategic partnership with Pyeongtaek City to promote the hydrogen economy and achieve carbon neutrality.
On September 15, Uljin County and Pyeongtaek City signed a "Hydrogen Economy Innovation Leading Cooperation Agreement" in the main conference room of Pyeongtaek City Hall. The two sides agreed to jointly pursue the designation of a hydrogen-specialized complex and to cooperate across the entire hydrogen industry value chain.

The signing ceremony was attended by more than 20 participants, including Uljin County Mayor Son Byeongbok, Pyeongtaek City Mayor Jung Jangsun, as well as representatives from companies and research institutes such as Mikopower, the East Sea Rim Industry Research Institute, and the Korea Institute of Clean Hydrogen Promotion, reaffirming their commitment to collaboration.
Uljin County is emerging as a large-scale clean hydrogen production base, leveraging the potential of the Hanul Nuclear Power Plant, while Pyeongtaek City is growing as a key hydrogen production, distribution, and utilization hub in the greater Seoul metropolitan area.
Based on their complementary strengths, the two local governments aim to present an innovative model for the national hydrogen industry and will pursue practical cooperation with the goal of jointly designating a hydrogen-specialized complex in 2025.
In addition, both local governments plan to establish a working-level consultative body to implement the agreement, develop joint projects in detail, and further advance a sustainable cooperation model.
Mayor Son Byeongbok stated, "This agreement will serve as an opportunity for Uljin to go beyond simply being a nuclear hydrogen production base and become a leading region in South Korea's hydrogen industry. Through our partnership with Pyeongtaek City, we will open a new chapter in South Korea's hydrogen economy."
