Offer a Glimpse into the Present and Future of the Robotics Industry
The "25th Korea Intelligent Robot Competition," hosted by Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang City and organized by the Korea Institute of Robot Convergence, was held at Manindang, Pohang Sports Complex, over two days from the 13th to the 14th.
This year's competition featured a total of 22 teams and over 100 participants, who fiercely competed in three categories: intelligent robots, defense robots, and performance robots.
The opening ceremony on the first day was attended by Jang Sangkil, Deputy Mayor of Pohang City; Choi Hyukjun, Director of the Meta AI Science Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province; Lim Juhui, Chairperson of the Economic and Industrial Committee of the Pohang City Council; provincial and city council members; and Jung Gubong, Deputy Director of the Korea Institute of Robot Convergence. For the opening performance, the dual-arm robot "Kiro" took the stage, guiding guests and showcasing its skills, officially marking the start of the competition to enthusiastic applause from the audience.
The event venue was bustling with citizens eager to see cutting-edge robots up close, as well as teams gathered from across the country.
The participating teams demonstrated their capabilities in the following categories: intelligent robots, which showcased technologies such as AI, big data, software, development of intelligent capabilities, sensors, mechanisms, and creativity; defense robots, which performed missions such as exploration, identification, search, and rescue on mission-based tracks representing Korea's four seasons, aiming to strategize unmanned combat systems; and performance robots, which combined K-culture and mass appeal. The event provided judges and citizens alike with an opportunity to witness the diverse possibilities and future growth potential of K-robots.
Additionally, a "Special Robot Company Zone" was operated during the competition, featuring promising domestic and international robot companies such as Juwon Robotics, FRT Robotics, Roas, and Neuromeka, who demonstrated their flagship robot products and attracted significant attention.
An exhibition of humanoid robots developed by the Korea Institute of Robot Convergence was also held, offering a valuable opportunity to reflect on the development of Korea's robotics industry and to explore the future direction of the industry.
To ensure that citizens could enjoy the event as families beyond simple viewing, various side events and hands-on programs were also provided, including a coding education zone, bubble show, and dance robot zone.
Jang Sangkil, Deputy Mayor of Pohang City, stated, "The Korea Intelligent Robot Competition is a prestigious event that has led the advancement of robotics technology and revitalized the local robotics industry. I hope this competition serves as a catalyst for Pohang to leap forward as a cutting-edge robotics city by discovering outstanding talent and raising public interest."
As the global robotics market rapidly expands and gains attention as a core industry of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Pohang City is accelerating its efforts to become a hub city for advanced robotics industries.
