Jeonju City in North Jeolla Province announced on September 12 that the KBS "National Singing Contest," a representative national program of South Korea, will be held at Deokjin Park at 2 p.m. on October 14, marking its return to the city after 12 years.
According to the city, this event is planned as a citizen festival where both residents and tourists can come together to enjoy and celebrate in harmony.
Prior to the main event, a preliminary round will be held at 1 p.m. on October 12 at the Jeonju City Hall auditorium. Contestants for the finals will be selected through this preliminary round. Applications can be submitted from September 15 to 19, and the preliminary round will be limited to the first 300 teams on a first-come, first-served basis.
Anyone who is a resident of Jeonju, operates a business in Jeonju, works, or studies in the city is eligible to apply. Applications can be submitted in person at each neighborhood community center or via email. For more details, please refer to the Jeonju City website.
Notably, this Jeonju edition will feature popular guest singers such as Kim Seonghwan, Kang Moonkyung, Yoon Taehwa, Jeon Yujin, and Jin Hyun, providing a rich and entertaining experience for citizens.
The city plans to use this National Singing Contest as an opportunity to further solidify Jeonju’s reputation as a “Cultural City of Korea” where citizens are the stars. In addition to showcasing traditional cultural assets such as pansori, hanji, and hanok, Jeonju will also prepare a stage that the public can enjoy together.
Furthermore, the city aims to make this National Singing Contest more than just a competition, turning it into a platform for citizen unity and regional promotion. Since it will be held at Deokjin Park, a major urban tourist attraction, it is expected to offer a special experience for tourists visiting Jeonju in the autumn season.
A city official stated, "The National Singing Contest, returning to Jeonju after 12 years, is a cultural festival that everyone can enjoy together," and added, "We ask for the enthusiastic participation and interest of many citizens."
Meanwhile, since its first broadcast in 1980, the "National Singing Contest" has been a beloved long-running program that has united generations for over 40 years. It has not only discovered hidden talents in local communities but also provided a stage for residents to showcase their abilities, creating a sense of national solidarity across generations.
