Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) has withdrawn its plan to install a combined heat and power (CHP) facility within the Hwaseong Jin-an public housing district, which was to be located near residential areas.
According to Hwaseong City on September 11, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and LH have decided to cancel the original site plan for the CHP facility within the Jin-an district. Instead, they will review alternative sites to protect residents' living environments and residential areas.
The Jin-an district was announced in August 2021 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as part of a plan to expand housing supply in metropolitan areas. The project covers approximately 4.53 million square meters across Jin-an, Banwol, Gisan, and Byeongjeom-dong in Hwaseong City.
However, LH's plan to build the CHP facility in the eastern and southern parts of the district, close to apartment complexes and schools, raised concerns among local residents, who repeatedly called for the plan to be scrapped. The city also formally requested several times, through consultations with relevant agencies, that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and LH withdraw the plan and secure an alternative site.
Going forward, the city plans to maintain close cooperation with relevant agencies to ensure that the alternative site meets local conditions and residents' needs.
Jung Myunggeun, Mayor of Hwaseong, stated, "The withdrawal of the CHP facility site is a valuable achievement made possible by the joint efforts of the city and its citizens," adding, "We will continue to fully reflect residents' opinions to prevent the indiscriminate placement of such facilities in the future."
