Arm Unveils Next-Generation AI Chip Platform 'Lumex'... On-Device Performance Up Fivefold

Accelerating On-Device AI for Smartphones and PCs
Equipped with SME2 Engine, Reducing Response Time by 40%
GPU Enables Faster AI Inference

British semiconductor design company Arm has unveiled a next-generation platform that enables faster and more efficient use of artificial intelligence (AI) on smartphones and PCs.

On September 10, Arm held a press conference at the Lotte Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, to announce its new computing platform, "Lumex." Lumex is a package that integrates a central processing unit (CPU), a graphics processing unit (GPU), and dedicated AI features into one, allowing device manufacturers to launch new products quickly without undergoing complex optimization processes.

The core of the platform is the "SME2" technology, which is dedicated to AI computation. SME2 can process large-scale operations simultaneously, boosting AI performance by up to five times compared to previous solutions and reducing voice translation latency by 4.7 times. Audio generation speed has also increased by 2.8 times, enabling smoother video conference interpretation and music or voice content production.

China's Alipay and smartphone manufacturer Vivo reported that applying SME2 reduced AI response times by up to 40%. Arm aims to implement SME2 in all CPUs, deploy it in more than 3 billion devices by 2030, and achieve a total performance of 10 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

Graphics performance has also been enhanced. The new GPU, "Mali G1 Ultra," delivers more realistic light reflection and shadow rendering compared to previous models, allowing large-scale games like Fortnite to be enjoyed on smartphones at console-level quality.

Arm also provides support for SME2 integration with major AI development tools from companies such as Google and Microsoft through the "KleidiAI Library." Developers can leverage performance improvements without additional modifications, and users can experience faster services with simple updates.

Chris Bergey, Executive Vice President at Arm, stated, "AI is the foundation of next-generation mobile and consumer technology," adding, "With Lumex, we are meeting consumer expectations for on-device AI."
