Tear Gas Leaks from Seoul Police Close-Range Sprayer, Causing Harm to Citizen

An accident occurred in which tear gas leaked from a close-range sprayer being removed from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's equipment warehouse, causing harm to a citizen.


According to police on September 9, at around 11:10 a.m. that day, some tear gas leaked from a close-range sprayer that was being transferred to a disposal company's vehicle at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's mobile unit warehouse in Sindang-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. A woman in her 30s who was passing by reported to the police and fire authorities, saying, "After the vehicle passed, my eyes started to sting and I couldn't open them." She received emergency treatment from paramedics who responded to the scene.


A representative from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency explained that they are currently in the process of disposing of tear gas equipment that was used in the 1990s, and that during the transfer of 600 close-range sprayers to a disposal company's vehicle, tear gas leaked from one of the sprayers. The representative added, "We contacted the affected citizen, explained the situation, and offered an apology."
