"I also use an agitator washing machine."
This was stated by Seunghoon Lee, CEO of Good Day Home Care. Earlier this month, he released a video on the Knowledge Inside YouTube channel explaining the advantages of agitator washing machines over drum models. Within seven days of its release, the video surpassed 1.3 million views, as it highlighted that agitator washing machines outperform drum models in both cleaning power and durability.
In the video, CEO Lee explained, "Drum washing machines suddenly became widespread in the 2020s, and at the time, design elements played a significant role," adding, "Drum washing machines became popular because they featured a drying function that agitator models did not have."
He also mentioned improvements in agitator washing machines. "Recently, the performance of agitator washing machines has improved so much that they are now comparable to drum models, with effective water-heating and boiling functions," he said. "Although their capacity has increased, the external size has not, so I have heard that many people are switching to agitator models these days due to space constraints."
The greatest strength of agitator washing machines, according to him, is their cleaning power. He pointed out that drum models use a drop method, where laundry falls from top to bottom, resulting in lower cleaning performance compared to agitator machines. In contrast, agitator washing machines fill with water and use a vortex motion to wash clothes, which he believes delivers superior cleaning results.

Lee explained, "The drop-based washing method (used by drum machines) does not provide high cleaning power, so unless you specifically set it to cold water, drum washing machines heat the water to 40 degrees Celsius for washing." He added, "For those who mainly wash with cold water to protect jeans or fabrics, agitator washing machines are the more suitable choice."
There are also users for whom drum washing machines are more appropriate-those who prioritize minimizing fabric damage. He said, "Drum washing machines, because of the drop method, have the drawback of slightly lower cleaning power, but they have the advantage of reducing fabric wear." However, he also noted, "The difference in fabric damage is not easily noticeable to the naked eye."
He also recommended agitator washing machines because they are more affordable. He emphasized that repair costs are also lower for agitator models.
Lee stated, "Drum washing machines are more prone to breakdowns during transport," explaining, "They contain very heavy weights inside to maintain balance, and since they weigh over 100 kilograms, they are more likely to be damaged during moves. Therefore, if you live alone or expect to move several times, I recommend choosing an agitator washing machine."
Meanwhile, agitator and drum washing machines also differ in their cleaning methods. Experts advise that for drum washing machines, you should open the detergent drawer and door and remove the filter after each wash to eliminate residual water, which helps prevent freezing in winter and reduces mold by improving ventilation. For agitator washing machines, you should clean the internal filter, washboard, and detergent drawer with a toothbrush.
