Gwangju Dong-gu District announced on September 9 that it will operate the 'Donggu Humanities Walking Trail Exploration Program' on October 16 and 17, during the 22nd Gwangju Memories of Chungjang Festival, in the areas of Geumnam-ro and Chungjang-ro.
The 'Donggu Humanities Walking Trail' is a walking exploration course established by Dong-gu District in 2020 by discovering local humanities resources and incorporating storytelling. Over the course of approximately two hours, participants can experience and listen to explanations about the history and culture of the original downtown area surrounding major festival venues such as 5·18 Democracy Square, Heunghakgwan, Newspaper and Magazine Reading Room, and Honam-dong Cathedral, while following the Gwangju Spirit Archetype Trail. The program was designed to offer a deeper understanding of the region's historical value and humanities resources.
The course is divided into four sections: ▲Mudeung Path (Chunseolheon, Jeungsimsa Temple, etc.), ▲Gwangju Spirit Archetype Trail (5·18 Democracy Square, site of Heunghakgwan, etc.), ▲Purposeful Path (Poet Moon Byung-ran's House, Jawoon Temple, etc.), and ▲Bright Hope Path (site of Dongmyeong Hotel, Nongjang Bridge, etc.).
Applications for participation in the exploration program will be accepted throughout this month, and any group of five or more people is eligible to apply. Those wishing to participate should submit their applications by September 30. For further details, please contact the Humanities City Policy Division, Humanities City Planning Team by phone.
Lim Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu District, stated, "The Donggu Humanities Walking Trail Exploration being held during the 22nd Gwangju Memories of Chungjang Festival is especially meaningful," adding, "I hope many citizens will participate and experience the history and culture of Gwangju's original downtown."
