KakaoTalk Reply Feature Overhaul Expected... Replies to Replies with "Nested Replies"

Expected to Be Unveiled at This Month's "if(kakao)" Conference

The reply feature in KakaoTalk is expected to undergo a complete overhaul. Instead of the current method, which allows only one reply per message, it is highly likely that a "nested reply" system will be introduced, enabling users to reply directly to replies.

According to the IT industry on September 9, Kakao is expected to unveil this service improvement plan at the "if(kakao)25" conference, which will be held on September 23.

Kakao introduced the reply feature in 2018, allowing users to long-press on a message in a chatroom to send a reply. This function is useful for responding to previous messages, but currently, only one reply can be attached to a message as a separate response at a time.

It has been reported that Kakao is considering revamping this feature to allow multiple "nested replies" on a single message. This approach is similar to the "thread" function used in Slack, the collaboration tool from Salesforce in the United States. Threads are a method commonly found not only in Slack but also in overseas online communities, and are specialized for enabling multiple people to discuss a specific topic.

The overhaul of KakaoTalk, including the update to the reply feature, is scheduled to be announced at if(kakao), which will take place from September 23. During this year's if(kakao) event, the results of Kakao's collaboration with OpenAI will also be unveiled.

A Kakao representative stated, "We are preparing to diversify the reply feature to reflect the needs of various users," adding, "The details have not been finalized, and the final version will be released at if(kakao)."
