Revitalizing Traditional Markets
A Relay of Events to Boost Consumption
Jangnim Alley Market in Saha-gu, Busan, will be hosting a festival that captures the flavors and excitement of traditional markets.
The Busan city government announced that the "Jangnim Alley Market Eomuk Grand Festival" will take place from September 11 to 13, running each day from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This event has been organized to revitalize traditional markets facing difficulties due to the economic downturn and reduced consumer spending. It aims to boost sales for merchants and attract new customers. Going beyond simple discount events, the festival is designed to offer visitors both value-for-money purchases and unique experiences through hands-on programs that reflect the market’s characteristics, while merchants can expect tangible sales benefits.
Since last year, Jangnim Alley Market has been developing "eomuk" (fish cake), a local Busan delicacy, as its specialty product, and this festival will showcase its achievements. During the event, a variety of programs will be held, including fish cake tasting, fish cake-making experiences, daily distribution of discount coupons worth up to 10,000 won, prize events, a night-time street food zone, and performances by popular singers.
At the festival, visitors can sample more than ten types of fish cake at affordable prices, and children can participate in hands-on programs where they make and take home their own fish cake. Every day, a 10,000 won discount coupon will be offered for purchases of 15,000 won or more at participating stores. The prize event, which can be entered with receipts of 15,000 won or more, will feature prizes such as refrigerators, meat sets, and fish cake sets. Customers who purchase side dishes worth over 10,000 won will also receive a free beer coupon, allowing them to enjoy the lively nighttime atmosphere with a cold beer.
Throughout the market, the "Kkolmoki Couple Performance," a touring stage blending humor and rhythm, will be held, along with a special performance by a singer from "Mr. Trot." The "Jangnim Alley Market Singing Contest," in which local residents participate, is expected to further enhance the festive spirit with prize giveaways.
The city hopes that this event will help Jangnim Alley Market emerge as Busan’s leading traditional market specializing in fish cake. In addition, the city plans to invigorate merchants and strengthen the growth foundation of traditional markets by hosting specialized festivals for each market.
This event is the second sales promotion in a relay series following the "Dottegi Street Festa" held at Gukje Market in August, and will be followed by the "Banyeo Discount Beer Festival" at Banyeo 2-dong Market in Haeundae-gu in October.
Kim Bongcheol, Director of Digital Economy at Busan City, said, "There are high expectations for Jangnim Alley Market as a fish cake specialty market, and we anticipate that this festival will provide practical support in boosting merchants’ sales and stimulating consumption. We hope it will become established as a traditional market festival that offers flavors, excitement, and entertainment to both citizens and tourists."
