50 Years as Actor, Director, and Producer
Honored for Contributions to Women in Film
The Busan International Film Festival has selected Taiwanese actor and director Sylvia Chang as this year's recipient of the Camellia Award.
On September 9, the festival's organizing committee explained the selection by stating, "She has expanded the scope of Asian women filmmakers over the past 50 years through her work as an actor, director, and producer."
Chang has appeared in more than 100 films and has won Best Actress awards at various international film festivals. Since the 1980s, she has also directed fifteen films, including "20 30 40" (a Golden Bear nominee at the Berlin International Film Festival), "Whispering Hearts" (the opening film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival), and "Love Education" (the closing film at the 2017 Busan International Film Festival and winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards).
Recognized as a pioneer of Asian women's cinema, she remains active as a mentor and producer, discovering and supporting emerging directors.
In her acceptance speech, Chang said, "I gratefully accept this award," and added, "I look forward to sharing my latest film, 'Tanyantile,' which has been invited to this year's Open Cinema section, with audiences at the outdoor theater of the Busan Cinema Center."
The Camellia Award was established last year by the Busan International Film Festival in partnership with Chanel. The award aims to elevate the status of women in the film industry and highlight their cultural and artistic contributions. The award ceremony will take place at the opening ceremony of the 30th Busan International Film Festival on September 17.
