Shin Dongcheon, chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC), which operates under the Prime Minister's Office, has resigned with about half of his term remaining.
According to the Office for Government Policy Coordination on September 9, Chairman Shin recently expressed his intention to resign, and Prime Minister Kim Minseok accepted his resignation.
Chairman Shin was appointed in March last year during the Yoon Suk Yeol administration. The term for the NRC chairman is three years, but Shin is stepping down after serving only one year and six months. With his resignation, the Prime Minister's Office is expected to begin searching for his successor.
The NRC is responsible for supporting and managing 26 government-funded research institutes in the fields of economics and the humanities and social sciences. As the position oversees national research institutes that are closely linked to government policy, it has often been replaced according to changes in administration, regardless of the chairman's official term.
