This project will invest a total of 38.6 billion won, including 25.6 billion won in national and provincial funds. The city will officially begin establishing the necessary infrastructure, including the construction of the center within the hydrogen-specialized general industrial complex.

The CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) industry is a sector that reduces atmospheric carbon emissions by capturing, utilizing, and storing carbon dioxide. Advanced economies such as the United States and Europe are already fostering it as a new growth engine for achieving carbon neutrality. In Korea, the implementation of relevant legislation this year has provided a legal basis for the promotion center construction project and prompted government support.

The kickoff meeting was attended by representatives from the lead agency, the Korea Institute of Energy Research, as well as participating organizations including the Korea Testing Laboratory, Gangwon Technopark, Korea CCUS Promotion Group, Samcheok City, and Gangwon Province. Attendees shared the latest information, including testing and certification plans, and discussed directions for the development of the project.

The CCUS Promotion Center will support the entire growth cycle of companies by providing research and development support for CO₂ capture and utilization, market analysis, and startup and management support. It also plans to broadly address the needs for certification and demonstration.

Park Sangsoo, Mayor of Samcheok, stated, "We expect the CCUS Promotion Center to become a foundation for revitalizing local industry as a new industry and as a national policy support institution. I would like to express my deep gratitude to Assemblyman Lee Cheolgyu for his significant assistance in advancing this government-funded project."
