Sharing the Importance of Iron Deficiency Management Before and After Surgery
JW Pharmaceutical announced on September 8 that it held the 'SAVE Symposium' to share the efficacy of its high-dose iron injection 'Perinject' over two days from August 30 at Nest Hotel in Jung-gu, Incheon.

Perinject is a high-dose iron injection that can replenish up to 1,000 mg of iron in as little as 15 minutes per day. It is used to treat iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia in women and patients at high risk due to chronic bleeding, as well as for anemia caused by various surgeries and cancer treatments.
The symposium was attended by medical professionals, including orthopedic and neurosurgery specialists in the spine and knee joint fields. On the first day, August 30, Park Sanghun, an orthopedic professor at Ilsan Hospital, gave a lecture on 'Iron Deficiency Management for Optimizing Outcomes in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) Patients.'
Professor Park stated, "Total knee arthroplasty is one of the surgeries with significant blood loss, and anemia and iron deficiency are often treated with transfusions. However, transfusions are associated with several negative outcomes, so a cautious approach is necessary."
He added, "It is important to systematically diagnose and manage iron deficiency and anemia before and after surgery. There is accumulating evidence that Perinject is significantly effective in treating iron deficiency in the perioperative period, and studies have reported that it meaningfully reduces transfusion rates."
Jo Jaeho, director of Olbareun Seoul Hospital, delivered a lecture on 'Iron Management and Evaluation of Transfusion Appropriateness in Perioperative Patients,' stating, "The ongoing third transfusion appropriateness evaluation includes total knee replacement and spinal fusion surgeries, which involve substantial blood loss. There are still cases of unnecessary transfusions, so appropriate transfusion practices and accurate diagnosis and management of iron deficiency are crucial."
On August 31, Park Jonghun, an orthopedic professor at Korea University Anam Hospital, gave a lecture on the paradigm shift in the concept of Patient Blood Management (PBM), emphasizing the importance of treatments that reflect the spirit of the times. Professor Park said, "The goal of correcting preoperative anemia is to avoid transfusions during surgery. In actual clinical practice, hemoglobin (Hb) levels in surgical patients improved after administration of Perinject."
A JW Pharmaceutical representative said, "Patient blood management has become the global standard for enhancing safety and treatment efficiency. As Perinject offers a treatment option that can rapidly replenish iron, we plan to expand our marketing activities."
