Under the theme of "The Present and Future of Island Cultural Diversity," the forum brings together island experts from 10 countries, including Korea, Greece, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia, to share various case studies of island cultures in each country and discuss directions for sustainable development.
During the opening session, Professor Gloria Pungetti of the University of Sassari in Italy delivered a keynote speech on "Biocultural Diversity of Islands and the Participation of Local Residents." Professor Pungetti emphasized, "Islands are spaces where ecology and culture are closely connected, and true conservation is impossible without the voluntary participation of residents."
Following this, domestic and international experts presented case studies and engaged in a comprehensive discussion under the theme "The Current Status and Changes in Island Cultural Diversity." Presenters from each country shared how unique island cultures are changing due to various factors such as climate change, tourism development, and population decline, and exchanged views on how to preserve and pass on these cultures.
Kim Jonggi, Secretary-General of the Committee, stated, "This forum is a very meaningful occasion where island experts, residents, policymakers, and researchers from home and abroad come together," adding, "We will use this opportunity to promote the cultural value of islands internationally and lay the foundation for the successful hosting of the Expo."
Meanwhile, on the 5th, sessions such as "The Future of Island Cultural Diversity and Sustainable Tourism" and "Development Strategies for Island Regions through the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo" are scheduled. At 6:30 p.m. on the same day, a D-365 commemorative event will be held at the Yeosu World Expo venue.
