"What Is That?"... China's Parade Surprises with Debut of 'Wolf Robot'

Quadrupedal "Wolf Robot" Unveiled for the First Time
Capable of Carrying Up to 20kg... Operates for 2.5 Hours
"Can Cooperate with Humans Even in Dangerous Areas"

China unveiled its quadrupedal "Wolf Robot" for the first time at the Victory Day military parade. This robot is a next-generation unmanned combat device capable of both shooting and reconnaissance.

According to Southern Metropolis Daily and state-run China Central Television (CCTV) on September 3, an unmanned ground combat unit appeared at the parade held at Tiananmen Square in Beijing that day.

According to reports, the equipment showcased at the parade consisted of unmanned combat vehicles capable of performing a variety of missions, including reconnaissance and attack, mine detection and explosive ordnance disposal, and platoon support. These vehicles can be remotely controlled and operate autonomously, flexibly forming squads to create a new combat format in which humans and unmanned systems cooperate on land.

Notably, the parade also featured the quadrupedal "Wolf Robot." The prototype of this robot is a four-legged robotic dog developed by a subsidiary of China North Industries Group, and it was first unveiled at the Zhuhai China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in November 2024.

In early August this year, the CCTV documentary "Attack - Determination to Build the Strongest Army" featured scenes of the "Wolf Robot" conducting joint operations with soldiers. The footage showed the reconnaissance and strike-integrated "Wolf Robot," equipped with a rifle, suppressing enemies with precise firepower, rapidly maneuvering into enemy-occupied areas, and rear soldiers maintaining close tactical coordination as they followed.

According to the developer's website, this robot uses a Chinese-made chip capable of autonomous control, is equipped with one laser LiDAR at the front and one at the rear, and is fitted with five 360-degree panoramic cameras for all-around detection.

The "Wolf Robot" can carry objects weighing up to 20kg, has an operational range of about 10km, and can operate for approximately 2.5 hours. The battery can be replaced in less than 30 seconds. It can climb steep slopes with a 40-degree incline, overcome obstacles up to 30cm high, and move stably even in rubble, making it suitable for complex terrain environments.

Chinese military expert Li Li told Southern Metropolis Daily, "In urban close-quarters combat, the Wolf Robot combat group can enter narrow spaces that are difficult for humans to access. It can perform missions in dangerous areas and cooperate effectively with humans, making it highly useful on future battlefields."

Formation of Combat Platoons in Operational Areas... Reconnaissance, Strike, and Transport

The Wolf Robot combat group consists of one transport or control vehicle and several multi-type quadrupedal robots, enabling interconnection, information sharing, and dynamic autonomous cooperation among humans, vehicles, and wolves. Li explained, "When each transport vehicle deploys multiple Wolf Robots in an operational area, it can form an independent combat platoon. Some robots can perform reconnaissance, some can conduct strikes, and others can handle transport, including carrying ammunition, food, and emergency medical supplies."

CCTV reported that roles within the Wolf Robot combat unit are divided. The leader Wolf Robot is responsible for reconnaissance, detection, target information collection, and image transmission at the front line, and can receive commands within a 2.5km radius. The shooter is equipped with rifles and other strike equipment, and precisely targets enemies based on information transmitted by the reconnaissance Wolf Robot. The comprehensive support Wolf Robot can transport about 20kg of supplies and ammunition.

The developer of the Wolf Robot system recently stated, "We have achieved a core tactical upgrade from individual intelligence to collective intelligence. Based on a modular design, the universal Wolf Robot platform can be quickly and flexibly equipped with specialized reconnaissance and strike modules tailored to specific missions."

CCTV reported, "The Wolf Robot symbolizes the transition from a new level of productivity to a new level of combat power," adding that this intelligent unmanned group combat method can provide special forces and infantry units with comprehensive combat capabilities.

Military expert Fu Qianxiao told Southern Metropolis Daily, "In future battlefields, especially on land, the types and numbers of unmanned equipment will continue to increase, and the Wolf Robot is just one of these platforms."
