Jeong Stresses Reform, Quoting Albert Camus
Kim Urges Restraint from Personal Attacks Among Lawmakers
The Democratic Party of Korea has begun a policy members' meeting on September 3 to discuss a proposed amendment to the Government Organization Act, which includes the abolition of the Prosecutors' Office and the establishment of the Serious Crimes Investigation Office and the Public Prosecution Office.
The party leadership called for intense debate to prevent the spread of controversy and internal discord, while also urging members to "orderly follow the decision once it is made."
Jeong Cheongrae, leader of the Democratic Party, stated at the party's policy members' meeting held at the main building of the National Assembly that afternoon, "There is strong public opinion in favor of prosecutorial reform. There is also considerable public sentiment regarding a specialized court for rebellion cases."
After reaching a consensus at the policy members' meeting, the Democratic Party plans to hold a public hearing at the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee on September 4, followed by party-government consultations, and to process the Government Organization Act at the National Assembly plenary session on September 25.
Leader Jeong also commented on the various reforms currently being pursued by the party and government, saying, "We did not tolerate enemies of the Constitution in the name of the Constitution, and we dismissed the main suspect in the rebellion case. We are in the process of condemning the enemies of democracy in the name of democracy."
He went on to emphasize the need for swift reform by quoting French writer Albert Camus: "If we do not punish today's crimes, we encourage tomorrow's crimes. The French Republic was not built on tolerance."
Kim Byunggi, floor leader, also urged, "You must express your opinions passionately. Even if we cannot reach a consensus through sufficient discussion, this should be a forum to confirm what everyone is thinking and that differences are not mistakes."
He also requested that members refrain from personal attacks against those with differing opinions. Floor Leader Kim emphasized, "There must be absolutely no criticism of individuals, and even criticism should not be directed at people. I want to reiterate this point, and I hope today's discussion will lead to a healthy and positive outcome."
