Revamping the "Dream Tree Scholarship" into the "Y-Leader Scholarship"
Supporting Future Leaders with a 260 Million Won Fund
Yongsan-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Park Heeyoung) has revamped its existing "Dream Tree Scholarship" into the "Y-Leader Scholarship" to discover and nurture talents who will lead future society. Applications for the 2025 scholarship program will be accepted until the 12th of this month.
The name "Y-Leader Scholarship" combines the letter "Y" from the English words Yongsan, Youth, and Yes, with "Leader," symbolizing talents who will shape the future. The program goes beyond academic support, embodying the vision of "Next-generation global leaders nurtured by Yongsan."
The scholarship will be awarded to a total of 400 students-120 elementary school students, 120 middle school students, 120 high school students, and 40 university students-using a scholarship fund totaling 260 million won. Selection categories include: General, Community Service, Academic Excellence, and Special Talent. The program aims to broadly select students who have demonstrated outstanding abilities not only in academics and the arts but also in volunteerism, humanities, and social sciences. Out-of-school youth may also apply, except for the Academic Excellence category.
The General category targets students from households at or below the median income level who need tuition support. The Community Service category is for students who have made significant contributions to the community with exemplary volunteer spirit. The Academic Excellence category is for students whose grades in the previous semester ranked within the top 10% of their class. The Special Talent category seeks students who have demonstrated exceptional skills and talents, such as winning awards in competitions in the arts, sports, humanities, mathematics, or science.
Students or youth who have been registered residents of Yongsan-gu for at least one year as of the announcement date (August 25, 2025) are eligible to apply. Applications can be submitted to the local community center in their area of residence or to their current school (for Academic Excellence and Special Talent categories).
The district plans to select the final scholarship recipients through a review by the Yongsan-gu Scholarship Fund Management Committee in October. Results will be announced in November, and only successful applicants will be notified individually. Detailed eligibility requirements and required documents can be found on the Yongsan-gu website and the Education Portal.
Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, stated, "We have revamped this scholarship program to respond to changes in the global educational environment and to establish it as Yongsan's new talent development brand," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that the Y-Leader Scholarship helps students pursue their dreams and serves as a solid foundation for Yongsan's bright future."
