People Power Party Boycotts, Calling It "An Attempt to Shame"
Ruling Party: "Yoon Has Never Responded to Special Prosecutor's Summons Since July Re-Arrest"
The National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee conducted an on-site inspection at the Seoul Detention Center to investigate whether former President Yoon Sukyeol received preferential treatment during his incarceration and whether he obstructed the investigation during the special prosecutor's attempt to detain him.
On September 1, the committee visited the Seoul Detention Center for the inspection. Choo Mi-ae, the committee chairperson from the Democratic Party of Korea, stated, "This inspection aims to verify whether former President Yoon received any preferential treatment during his incarceration and to review video records such as CCTV footage from the time of the special prosecutor's attempt to question him, in order to identify any evidence of obstruction of the investigation." She added, "Since being re-arrested on July 10, former President Yoon has never complied with the special prosecutor's summons."
She continued, "While being investigated for insurrection, if he had even a shred of conscience, he should cooperate with the investigation and take appropriate responsibility. However, he continues to disregard the rule of law and displays shameful behavior, repeatedly obstructing the investigation." She further noted, "According to multiple reports, there are ongoing claims that he is receiving preferential treatment inside the detention center, such as special visitation privileges with his attorney that are not granted to ordinary inmates."
Kim Yongmin, the Democratic Party secretary of the committee, said, "Today's schedule was arranged after numerous discussions between myself, as the ruling party secretary, and the opposition secretary from the People Power Party. I must express my strong regret that, despite these repeated consultations, no one from the opposition attended today."
Assemblyman Kim pointed out, "The People Power Party claims that today's inspection is merely an attempt to embarrass former President Yoon, while at the same time insisting that his human rights are being violated. If that is the case, whether his human rights are actually being infringed upon or whether he is receiving preferential treatment should have been verified here together today. However, they have avoided participating in this crucial verification and are instead engaging only in political rhetoric and agitation from the sidelines."
