Choi Minho, the Mayor of Sejong, engaged in an open and honest conversation about the practical difficulties faced by North Korean defectors as they settle in the region and explored tangible support measures.
To this end, on August 29, a meeting was held at the Sejong Family Center under the theme "Envisioning the Future with Sejong," where North Korean defectors shared the various challenges they encounter in their daily lives. The event was organized to devise solutions to these issues.
Mayor Choi listened attentively as participants spoke about the difficulties they have experienced since defecting from North Korea, including their children's education, adapting to the local community, and financial burdens.
During the meeting, participants expressed the need for academic support, relief from the costs of private education, and more opportunities to supplement basic academic skills for their children. Requests were also made for cultural events that North Korean defectors and local residents could enjoy together.
Mayor Choi pledged to develop ways to provide learning expenses or scholarships to North Korean defectors and their children, and to quickly promote family-oriented events that can foster a sense of belonging and emotional stability. He stated, "We will spare no effort to provide full support so that North Korean defectors can smoothly settle in Sejong as citizens and dream of a future together with their children," adding, "We will carefully review the suggestions made during the meeting and ensure they are reflected in practical policies."
