Curcumin in Turmeric Aids Weight Management by Boosting Metabolism and Reducing Inflammation
Reduces Insulin Resistance and Effective Even During Weight Loss Plateaus
A study has found that daily consumption of turmeric, a spice found in curry, helps with weight loss and waist circumference reduction.
According to the Daily Mail on August 27 (local time), a recent meta-analysis published in the Journal of Nutrition and Diabetes confirmed that turmeric or its active component, curcumin, helps improve obesity indicators and has a positive effect on weight management.

Dr. Thomas Holland of Rush University College of Health Sciences in Chicago stated, "Turmeric or curcumin supplements were shown to slightly reduce weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, and body fat percentage." He added, "From a scientific perspective, these changes may appear minor, but even small improvements in abdominal obesity can reduce metabolic and cardiovascular risks."
The research analyzed clinical trials conducted on patients with type 2 diabetes. Participants consumed various doses of turmeric or curcumin, ranging from 80 mg to as much as 2,100 mg, over periods of 8 to 36 weeks. As a result, the group that took the supplements lost about 2 kg more on average than the placebo group, had a waist circumference reduction of about 2 cm, and a decrease in body fat percentage of around 3%. The effects were especially pronounced in prediabetic patients, who saw an average weight loss of 2.5 kg and a waist circumference reduction of more than 2.5 cm.
The research team explained, "Curcumin boosts metabolism and suppresses appetite, which contributed to reductions in weight and waist circumference. This shows that ingredients like turmeric alone can help prevent obesity and support weight management." However, they also emphasized, "Turmeric should only be used as a supplementary measure."

Nicole Hopsecger, an American dietitian and nutrition expert, also recently told the British media outlet The Sun, "Adding turmeric to your diet can help overcome weight loss plateaus." Hopsecger explained, "When insulin resistance is high, blood sugar is not well regulated, making fat storage easier and weight loss more difficult. Curcumin lowers insulin resistance, improving fat metabolism efficiency." She also added, "Turmeric helps relieve abdominal bloating and constipation."
Hopsecger advised, "Rather than consuming turmeric as is, it is better to drink it as tea or add the powder to dishes like stir-fried tofu or egg recipes." She particularly recommended eating it with tofu, explaining, "The protein in tofu combines with turmeric's antioxidant properties to aid muscle recovery and boost metabolism. Additionally, tofu's mild flavor balances out turmeric's distinctive aroma, making them a good match."
