Accelerating Innovation in Environment, Energy, and AI
UNIST is expanding its research and development (R&D) bases with top-tier European universities, taking steps to establish an international cooperation network.
UNIST (President Park Jongrae) has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) for global research and educational collaboration with Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) in Austria and the University of Twente in the Netherlands.
The first agreement was signed on the afternoon of the 26th local time at "TUtheSky," a networking space on the Getreidemarkt campus of Vienna University of Technology.

The signing ceremony was attended by Hyunshil Ahn, Vice President for Research at UNIST, and Kwanmyung Kim, Director of Research Affairs, as well as Peter Ertl, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and International Affairs at Vienna University of Technology, and Manwook Han, President of the European Korean Scientists and Engineers Association (EKC).
The two institutions agreed to formalize researcher exchanges and actively expand interdisciplinary joint research.
In particular, they plan to establish a "Science Exchange Center" as a bridge for faculty and student collaboration, which will also be linked to each institution's startup ecosystem. Additionally, they will participate in joint projects such as "Horizon Europe," the European Union's flagship research program, to promote innovative research in the fields of environment, energy, and AI.
Vice President Ahn stated, "Collaboration with Vienna University of Technology is a stepping stone for UNIST to become a global research hub," adding, "We will accelerate the establishment of a global R&D platform connecting Asia, the United States, and Europe."
Vice President Ertl commented, "By combining the strengths of both institutions, we will promote international joint research and create an environment where researchers and students can freely interact."
On the 28th, an MOU signing ceremony was held at the University of Twente campus in Enschede, the Netherlands. Hyunshil Ahn, Vice President for Research at UNIST, and Vinod Subramaniam, President of the University of Twente, signed the agreement.

The two sides will carry out multi-layered collaboration, including: research, education, and exchanges of students and researchers; expansion of interdisciplinary joint research; mutual invitations and professional development for faculty and staff; hosting of symposiums, academic conferences, and short courses; strengthening of industry-academia-research cooperation; and participation in EU research programs.
Vice President Ahn emphasized, "This agreement will serve as an opportunity to further enhance UNIST's global research capabilities," and added, "We will lead future innovation through international research and talent exchange."
President Subramaniam stated, "By combining the research capabilities and technology commercialization expertise of both institutions, we will concretize the industry-academia cooperation model."
With these consecutive MOUs, UNIST plans to strengthen joint research on global issues such as environment, energy, advanced materials, and AI, and to actively attract outstanding European talent, thereby building an integrated platform that links research, education, and talent acquisition.
Vienna University of Technology is a key hub in the European research network, with world-class capabilities in engineering, natural sciences, and information technology. The University of Twente is known as the "Entrepreneurial University" and excels in industry-academia-research innovation in the fields of nanotechnology, medical technology, and ICT.
