A member of a voice phishing organization, who operated under the orders of a ringleader known as "Ma Dongseok" based in Cambodia, has been sentenced to prison in the first trial.
On August 28, the 12th Criminal Division of the Seoul Eastern District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Junghyung) sentenced Shin and Na, who were indicted and detained on charges including joining and participating in a criminal organization, to four years and one year and six months in prison, respectively.
The court stated, "The defendants bear significant responsibility for joining or directing a group that systematically defrauded numerous victims," adding, "The sentences reflect their full admission of the crimes and their active cooperation with the investigative authorities."
From October of last year to April of this year, they were brought to trial on charges of defrauding 11 victims of 527 million won through voice phishing as part of the "Hanya Call Center" organization, which was led by a foreign ringleader operating under the alias "Ma Dongseok."
