A teenage operator who posted victims' personal information without consent in a Telegram chat room with hundreds of participants and demanded money has been arrested by the police.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced on the 27th that they had recently arrested individual A on charges including violations of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, the Information and Communications Network Act, the Personal Information Protection Act, and attempted extortion.
From January of this year until recently, A is accused of operating a group chat room on Telegram called "Suyongso" ("Concentration Camp"), where they posted victims' personal details such as age, appearance, occupation, and educational background without permission, and then threatened to demand money in exchange for deleting the data.
The police have determined that there were hundreds of participants in the chat room run by A, and that more than 170 people have fallen victim to this scheme.
A police official stated, "A received the victims' information from someone else in the form of 'reports' and posted it in the group chat room," adding, "We are conducting additional investigations into accomplices who jointly operated the chat room."
