Yeongam County to Seize License Plates from Vehicles with Overdue Car Fines

Yeongam County in South Jeolla Province will begin seizing license plates from vehicles with overdue car fines starting on August 28.

The county announced on the 26th that the crackdown will focus on vehicles without mandatory insurance or with delayed insurance registration, vehicles that have not undergone the required comprehensive inspection or have delayed it, and those with unpaid fines for illegal parking.

In particular, the county will prioritize vehicles with fines of 300,000 won or more that have been overdue for over 60 days, aiming to enhance fairness for diligent taxpayers and uphold tax justice. Unlike habitual or high-amount offenders, vehicles used for livelihood purposes will be subject to differentiated collection measures, such as installment payments or advance notice of license plate seizure, taking into consideration the economic activities of the owners.

Seized license plates will only be returned after the full payment of overdue fines. Owners can reclaim their plates by visiting the Construction and Transportation Division of Yeongam County after making the payment.

Ryu Mia, head of the Construction and Transportation Division, stated, "Once your license plate is seized, vehicle operation will be restricted, so we urge you to pay any overdue fines before the crackdown begins," adding, "We will continue our efforts to foster an advanced tax payment culture through ongoing management."
