Seongbukcheon, located in front of Seongbuk District Office in Seoul, has been transformed into a new urban cultural space where people can enjoy culture and relaxation through the "Waterfront Vitality Hub Development Project."
Seongbuk District (headed by Mayor Lee Seungro) announced on the 26th that it had implemented the Waterfront Vitality Hub Development Project, which was selected as a 2023 Seoul Metropolitan Government initiative. The project included the installation of stands, stepping stones, and river access stairs, as well as comprehensive environmental improvements.
As a result of this project, Seongbukcheon now features a wider river width, creating a greater sense of openness, and new access stairs have been installed throughout, significantly improving accessibility. The stands and stepping stones in front of the district office have become spaces where walkers and cyclists can stop and rest.
In particular, by linking with the "Baram Madang" plaza in front of Seongbuk District Office, the area now provides a foundation for hosting festivals and cultural events. On August 14, the 80th Anniversary of Liberation Day cultural festival, "With the Light Regained, Shouting for Seongbuk's Night," was held with great success in the Seongbukcheon riverside space, demonstrating its potential as a new cultural venue.
The district plans to further develop Seongbukcheon into a representative cultural and artistic space by hosting a variety of events along the stream and through the upcoming "Seongbuk Star Light Plaza" (media facade) project currently in preparation.
Additional nighttime lighting facilities have also been installed, adding an emotional atmosphere in the evening. Already known as a cherry blossom hotspot, Seongbukcheon is expected to establish itself as an urban healing destination where citizens can enjoy walking, relaxation, and culture throughout all four seasons.
Lee Seungro, Mayor of Seongbuk District, stated, "Seongbukcheon has been reborn not just as a walking trail, but as a space where all residents can enjoy and share culture in their daily lives," adding, "We will continue to actively utilize and enhance the waterfront area so that residents can lead happier and more fulfilling lives."
