Emerges as a Cradle for Maritime and Port Logistics Talent
As the relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan enters its final stages, universities are moving quickly to respond to the anticipated demand for talent.
With Busan poised to become the true "maritime capital" of South Korea, the Department of Port and Logistics Systems at Dongmyung University (headed by Park Doojin) is drawing attention. The confirmed relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, along with six related government agencies, is expected to propel Busan into a global maritime logistics hub, which will in turn trigger a surge in demand for skilled professionals. Dongmyung University is home to a specialized department designed to cultivate precisely this pool of maritime talent.
This relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is expected to go beyond a simple administrative move, serving as a catalyst for strengthening the entire ecosystem of maritime logistics, smart ports, marine finance, and shipbuilding and marine industries. The construction of a massive port belt connecting Busan New Port and Jinhae New Port, the implementation of AI and big data-based smart port operations, and the introduction of a marine-specialized 5G communications network are all set to accelerate, concentrating advanced maritime infrastructure around Busan.
The Department of Port and Logistics Systems at Dongmyung University, the first department in the nation specialized in port logistics, was established in 2006 and has since produced numerous maritime professionals. Alumni from this department have advanced into a wide range of fields, including port operators, domestic shipping companies, international forwarding, transportation enterprises, and logistics centers in port hinterlands.
Leveraging a strong alumni network, the department also enhances students' career competitiveness by offering hands-on training programs in partnership with major domestic shipping companies and global logistics firms, as well as overseas employment programs.
The department's distinctive curriculum is also noteworthy. Through practice-oriented courses such as Smart Port Operations, Logistics Information System Development, Port Logistics Data Management Practice, Container Terminal Operations, and Smart Bill of Lading Practice, students gain direct experience in the latest digital logistics environment.
Park Doojin, head of the department, stated, "As Busan evolves into a maritime capital, the demand for port and logistics professionals will increase explosively.
