Message on the South Korea-U.S. Summit Delivered via Facebook
Hopes for Resolution of Rice Market Opening and Steel Tariff Issues
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, delivered a message expressing his hopes for the success of the South Korea-U.S. summit.
On August 25, through his Facebook page, Governor Kim stated, "Tonight in Washington, D.C., President Lee Jaemyung and U.S. President Donald Trump are scheduled to hold a fateful South Korea-U.S. summit. It has been only 82 days since President Lee took office. The entire nation is focused on this summit, which will have a significant impact on Korea's economy, future, and the lives of its people."
He continued, "It is expected that the summit table will cover a wide range of topics, including the details of the South Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations concluded last month, and the modernization of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, spanning economic, trade, diplomatic, and security issues. Although President Trump is known as a master negotiator, President Lee Jaemyung is also an outstanding negotiator and strategist who has weathered many challenges."
He added, "While appropriately responding to the modernization of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, it is essential to secure tangible economic benefits. I also hope that President Lee will firmly resist the United States' unilateral pressure to open up the rice market. I am confident that, while maximizing the national interest, both South Korea and the United States will achieve a 'win-win' outcome through a successful summit."
Governor Kim further stated, "Due to the U.S. 50% steel tariff, Jeonnam Province's core steel industry is facing significant difficulties. The success of the Lee Jaemyung administration is essential for Korea's success. When it comes to national interests, there is no division between the ruling and opposition parties."
