Jeonju City Holds Special Exhibition "A Scene of Youth Revisited"

Special Exhibition at Hanok Village History Museum Runs Until September 7

On August 25, Jeonju City in North Jeolla Province announced that a special exhibition titled "A Scene of Youth Revisited" will be held at the Hanok Village History Museum until September 7.

This exhibition was organized in response to the enthusiastic reception of the "Jeonju Documentary Photo Exhibition," which took place last June at the White Western-style House, formerly the provincial governor's residence. The exhibition aims to revisit the value of records by once again evoking memories of school days that were shared during the previous event.

The exhibition space features over 80 documentary photographs, including scenes from Deokjin Park, Pungnammun Gate, Hyanggyo, Jeondong Cathedral, and Gyeonggijeon Shrine-major cultural heritage sites of Jeonju-as well as rare images such as students commuting at Jeonju Station in 1937 and school events at the General Stadium in the 1960s, which are now difficult to come by.

Key exhibits include: ▲ a commemorative photo of 101 first-year students at Pungnam Elementary School in 1954 ▲ a 1962 graduation photo from Jeonheung Elementary School (established by missionaries) ▲ a parade at Jeonju Kijeon Girls’ High School’s athletic meet in 1965 ▲ dance club activities at Jeonju Girls’ High School in 1955 ▲ a horseback game at Jeolla High School’s sports day in 1974 ▲ and a street performance by the Jeonju Agricultural High School band at Miwon Tower in 1974.

This exhibition also features eight rare textbooks of significant educational value. Specifically, these include: ▲ an elementary geography textbook from 1946 ▲ an elementary arithmetic (5-2) and elementary science (5-1) textbook from 1947 ▲ a new elementary comprehensive self-study guide from 1947 ▲ a "Life in Our Country" (4-1) textbook from 1948 ▲ and a middle school social life and neighboring countries (geography) textbook from 1949, all published during the US military government period.

These materials were actually used at Jochon Public Elementary School in the past. The donor had carefully preserved the entire set of textbooks up to the middle school level before donating these valuable records to the Jeonju Citizen Archives.

Choi Hyunchang, Director of Planning and Coordination for Jeonju City, said, "This meaningful exhibition of documentary photographs was made possible thanks to citizens who generously donated their treasured records to the Citizen Archives. Moving forward, we will continue to share Jeonju’s unique memories centered on private records and jointly uphold the value and responsibility of documentation."
