Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on the 25th that it had signed a business agreement with the Center for Education Innovation and Research Development (CEIRD) of Zimbabwe at the KHNP Radiation Health Institute on the 22nd.
The two organizations agreed to cooperate on a preliminary feasibility study for the introduction of innovative small modular reactors (i-SMR) in Zimbabwe. Under the agreement, they plan to actively collaborate on a preliminary feasibility study for the introduction of i-SMR in Zimbabwe, support for the training of nuclear professionals, and the sharing of nuclear technology information.
Most of Zimbabwe's electricity is generated by hydropower and thermal power. However, the country is facing difficulties in ensuring a stable power supply due to aging facilities and climate change. As a result, Zimbabwe is actively considering the introduction of nuclear power to diversify its energy portfolio and achieve its national development policy based on science and technology, known as "Vision 2030." In this context, KHNP expects that this business agreement will serve as a significant turning point in establishing Zimbabwe's mid- to long-term energy strategy.
Hwang Jooho, President of KHNP, stated, "Through this business agreement, we hope Zimbabwe will accelerate energy diversification and find sustainable energy solutions through SMRs. Based on our cooperation with Zimbabwe, KHNP will strengthen its foundation for entering the rapidly growing African energy market."
