Gyeonggi Province Transparently Discloses 'City Bus Public Management System Safety Ratings'

Gyeonggi Province Publishes Safety Grades and Scores
Encourages Voluntary Strengthening of Safety Management

Gyeonggi Province will transparently disclose the safety management status of each route under its own quasi-public city bus system, the 'City Bus Public Management System,' to residents. This aims to encourage bus operators to strengthen safety management and ensure the safety of the public.

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 25th that it will pilot an 'Safety Rating Disclosure System.' The province published the safety evaluation grades and scores for each of the 87 routes that operated in the first half of this year (with performance records from the previous year) on the Gyeonggi Transportation Corporation website.

The 'City Bus Public Management System' in Gyeonggi Province focuses on strengthening public oversight of city buses. Each year, a comprehensive evaluation is conducted by route, covering safety management and improvements in user services. Every three years, the system is reviewed for renewal, with an emphasis on enhancing public interest and transparency.

Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Transportation Corporation classified the routes into four grades based on the traffic accident index (level of casualties per average daily operating vehicle) and the status of vehicle safety management (including tires, safety equipment, fuel, etc.): S grade (excellent management), A grade (good management), B grade (needs partial improvement), and C grade (poor management, requires active improvement).

The results for the 87 routes were as follows: 33 routes (71.5%) received S grade, 31 routes (35.6%) received A grade, 11 routes (12.6%) received B grade, and 12 routes (13.8%) received C grade.

The province plans to conduct on-site inspections for companies with insufficient grades to create an environment where transport operators can focus on safety management. Following this year's pilot operation of the disclosure system, Gyeonggi Province will expand the disclosure categories next year to further reduce accidents, lower insurance costs, and improve services.

Kim Jongcheon, Director of the Bus Policy Division at Gyeonggi Province, said, "Through this pilot operation of the disclosure system, we plan to dramatically improve the quality of city bus services, resolve inconveniences for residents, and create a safer transportation environment."
