Gwangsan District was designated as a "Preemptive Response Area for Employment Crisis" by the government after concerns grew over employment instability and economic downturn in the region, following recent management difficulties at Daewoo Winia affiliates and a fire at the Kumho Tire Gwangju plant. This designation marks the first time the government has taken preemptive action before an employment crisis actually occurred. For the next six months, the district will receive special support, including employment retention subsidies, vocational training, and livelihood stabilization loans.
In its statement, the Gwangsan District Council expressed gratitude to District Mayor Park Byunggyu and public officials for their efforts in securing the designation, and pledged that the council would do its utmost to revitalize the local economy and stabilize employment. The council also emphasized the need for cooperation among the government, Gwangju City, businesses, and labor organizations to ensure that the measures are implemented without setbacks.
The council further stated that effective support and thorough implementation are necessary to ensure the system does not remain merely symbolic. It added that all administrative and financial support should be provided to protect workers' jobs, help companies recover, and safeguard the livelihoods of local residents.
