Uiryeong County Provides Guidance on Converting Existing Farm Huts to Rural Stay-Type Shelters

Temporary Accommodation for Farmers, Agricultural Work, and Weekend Experiences

Uiryeong County in South Gyeongsang Province is actively providing guidance on filing reports for the construction of temporary structures, specifically for converting existing farm huts into rural stay-type shelters that can serve as temporary accommodations for farmers.

Following the amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Farmland Act in January, previously registered farm huts can now be converted into stay-type shelters. These shelters allow individuals to stay in rural areas for a certain period, engage in farming work, and take breaks.

To make the conversion, if there are no violations associated with the registered farm hut, residents can visit the Architectural Civil Affairs Team at the Civil Service Division of Uiryeong County Office to cancel the existing registration and submit a new report for the construction of a temporary structure, along with a site plan and floor plan. However, if there are any violations, the conversion or new registration can only proceed after paying the required compliance penalty.

The installation standards for rural stay-type shelters specify that farmers or those engaging in weekend or experiential farming may build a single-story temporary accommodation for farming work, with a total floor area of up to 33 square meters and a height of up to 4 meters. Ancillary facilities such as parking spaces (up to 13.5 square meters, unpaved), decks (up to 15 square meters), and private sewage treatment facilities (up to 10 square meters) are also permitted.

However, installation is restricted in disaster prevention zones and areas designated for natural disaster risk improvement. Additionally, planting lawns or ornamental trees for garden or green space creation within the shelter is prohibited, and residents cannot register their address at these shelters.

For more detailed information on converting to a stay-type shelter, inquiries can be made to the Civil Service Division or the Agricultural Policy Division of Uiryeong County Office.

An official from the Agricultural Technology Center stated, "We expect that converting farm huts into rural stay-type shelters will expand opportunities for urban residents to experience rural life and improve convenience for farmers, thereby contributing to the revitalization of rural communities. Furthermore, this measure is expected to resolve illegal issues such as unauthorized changes of use or expansions of farm huts."
