US Vice President JD Vance argued on August 20 (local time) that Europe should bear a greater burden than the United States when it comes to security guarantees for Ukraine.
In an interview with Fox News that day, Vice President Vance said regarding Ukraine's security guarantees, "I don't think we should bear that burden. President (Donald Trump) expects Europe to play a leading role here," expressing this view.
He stated, "We should help if necessary to end the war and the bloodshed," but emphasized, "Whatever happens and whatever form it takes, Europe will have to shoulder the lion's share of the burden. This is their continent and their security."
He added, "The United States is open to discussions (regarding providing security guarantees for Ukraine), but we will not make any commitments until we determine what is essential to end the war first."
The previous day, President Trump dismissed the possibility of sending US troops to Ukraine in a Fox News interview, but said he would be open to discussing air support.
Vice President Vance also commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that he has spoken with him several times by phone and described him as "very deliberate" and "very careful." He added, "I fundamentally believe that he (President Putin) is someone who pursues what he sees as Russia's interests."
