Gwangju Nambu Fire Station announced on the 19th that it plans to award a commendation to a delivery driver who rescued a resident with courageous actions during a recent apartment fire in Nodaedong, Nam-gu, Gwangju.
At around 1 p.m. on the 18th, a fire broke out on the first floor of the apartment, prompting residents to evacuate urgently. During the evacuation, a woman in her 50s who was coming down from the fifth floor to the first floor found herself in a dangerous situation due to thick smoke and flames, making it difficult to escape. The woman was in a critical moment as she could not open the window because the handle had become too hot.
At that moment, a delivery driver passing by the scene immediately parked his truck close to the apartment’s exterior wall and climbed onto the top of the cargo area to approach the woman. To assist her escape, he instructed her on how to open the window and then helped her evacuate onto the top of the cargo area, successfully rescuing her with quick thinking.
Thanks to this courageous act, the rescued woman suffered burns to her face and arm (first-degree burn on her face and second-degree burn on her arm), but fortunately, her life is not in danger.
Park Chunghoon, chief of Gwangju Nambu Fire Station, stated, "Thanks to the delivery driver's bold decision and courage to carry out the rescue despite the danger, a precious life was saved," adding, "This is a valuable example that once again shows how a citizen's courage in a critical moment can save a life."
