At the meeting, attended by Chairman Jongdae Cho and the executives of the National Construction Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, participants listened to current issues and difficulties such as the priority employment of local construction workers, and discussed possible solutions.
During the meeting, the union executives explained that over 80% of the workforce at local construction sites consists of foreign workers, which is causing skilled workers to leave for other regions. They also addressed the recent safety accidents occurring at construction sites. The union requested that the city and the council review effective construction site safety management measures to prevent the recurrence of such accidents, and consider ways for Namyangju citizens to be given priority employment at major construction sites in the area, such as Wangsuk New Town.
Chairman Jongdae Cho stated, "I fully agree with the opinions expressed today regarding the priority employment of local residents and the priority participation of local construction equipment. The Namyangju City Council is continuously holding meetings with LH, the ordering organization, to increase the participation rate of local construction skilled workers and equipment companies at the Wangsuk New Town construction site, and is reviewing various measures."
He added, "Expanding employment for local residents is a very important issue, as it can directly lead to revitalizing the local economy and increasing tax revenue. Therefore, our council will continue to pay close attention and frequently arrange opportunities for communication like today, to ensure that the opinions of the labor union are fully reflected."
Meanwhile, the National Construction Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions plans to hold a joint safety prayer ceremony for Wangsuk and Jinjeop 2 districts on September 10, wishing for the safety of construction workers and the smooth completion of construction sites.
