Rep. Kim Won: "Unified Medical School in Mokpo and Suncheon Will Definitely Be Established" Kim Won, a member of the National Assembly, who has never let go of the effort to attract a medical school since entering politics.

Kim Won, a member of the National Assembly from Mokpo representing the Democratic Party of Korea, has once again reaffirmed his commitment to establishing a national medical school in South Jeolla Province. He stated, "The establishment of a unified medical school in Mokpo and Suncheon will definitely be realized," and added, "Now, only the process of making it a reality remains."

Kim commented on the inclusion of "the establishment of a national medical school" as the top policy task for South Jeolla Province in the 123 major national policy tasks announced by the National Policy Planning Committee on August 13. He said, "The 30-year aspiration of Mokpo citizens has finally been adopted as a national policy under the Lee Jae-myung administration," and evaluated it as "the first step toward a dramatic improvement in the health and public medical services for the residents of South Jeolla."

He pointed out, "South Jeolla is the only region among the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces nationwide that does not have a national medical school," and emphasized, "People's lives should not be valued differently just because they live in different places."

He recalled, "During the 21st National Assembly, I continuously called for the establishment of a medical school in Mokpo while serving on the Health and Welfare Committee. I even went as far as to shave my head in protest, earning the nickname 'Always Mokpo Medical School.'"

Kim further stressed, "The establishment of a national medical school in South Jeolla was a pledge of the Moon Jae-in administration, a campaign promise of presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, and has now been confirmed as the number one national policy task of the current administration. From here, we will steadily proceed with securing the medical school quota and coordinating with the Ministry of Education."

In particular, he added, "The Mokpo City Committee of the Democratic Party, Mokpo National University, Mokpo City, and the Mokpo City Council will form a consultative body to carry out concrete implementation steps together," and emphasized, "When it comes to common sense, Mokpo Medical School is the answer for a national medical school in South Jeolla. The support and encouragement of citizens is essential."
