1 Dead, 14 Injured
Arrest Warrant Requested by Police on the 15th
Warrant Issued by Seoul Northern District Court
A man who set fire to a multi-family residential building in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, resulting in 15 casualties, has been arrested by the police.
On the afternoon of August 16, Judge Won Jeongsuk of the Seoul Northern District Court issued an arrest warrant for Mr. A, a man in his 30s, after holding a pretrial detention hearing on charges of arson resulting in death and injury of an inhabited building. The judge cited concerns that he might attempt to flee.
Mr. A is suspected of setting fire to the parking lot of a four-story multi-family residential building in Jegi-dong at around 11:52 p.m. on August 12. The fire resulted in one death and 14 injuries.
The fire started in a cart loaded with waste paper. It spread rapidly because the parking lot had a piloti structure, an open design supported only by columns without walls.
The police arrested Mr. A in front of a commercial building in Seongdong-gu on the afternoon of August 14 and applied for an arrest warrant the following day.
