"Overcoming Racial Discrimination and Achieving Success in Music"
Haemil School in Hongcheon Introduced as a Multicultural Educational Initiative for Students of Diverse Backgrounds
Singer Insooni (real name Kim Insoon) has been selected as the recipient of the Woman of Influence Award presented by Pearl S. Buck International in the United States. It is the first time in 25 years that a Korean has received this award, following the late Lee Hee-ho in 2000.
According to the music industry on August 15, Pearl S. Buck International announced Insooni's selection as this year's awardee on its official website. The organization introduced Insooni as "a humanitarian and an advocate for young people of mixed-race and multicultural backgrounds," and added, "Born to a Korean mother and an African American father after the Korean War, she benefited from Pearl S. Buck International's child sponsorship program." The organization further stated, "She overcame racial discrimination in society, achieved success in the music industry, and became a household name in her home country."
Pearl S. Buck International also highlighted Haemil School, a multicultural school established by Insooni in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province in 2013. The name 'Haemil' is a pure Korean word meaning 'the clear sky after rain,' reflecting Insooni's hope to bring bright prospects to children from multicultural families. Insooni currently serves as the chairperson of the school.
The organization explained, "Insooni founded and operates Haemil School, a tuition-free alternative school for students of various racial backgrounds," and added, "She is also a board member of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation Korea."
Insooni will attend the award ceremony to be held on August 21 (local time) in Pennsylvania, United States.
