Reaffirming the Commitment to Pass Down Historical Awareness
On August 14, the Busan Regional Office of Veterans Affairs (Director: Lee Namil) held the 30th Memorial Service for Unknown Anti-Japanese Soldiers at the memorial monument in Seongsan 1-gu Small Park, Noksan-dong. The event was organized by the Noksan Hyangto Culture Center (Director: Eom Yunseong).
Noksan Hyangto Culture Center is holding the 30th Memorial Service to honor the spirits of unknown anti-Japanese soldiers. Provided by Busan Regional Office of Veterans Affairs, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
Approximately 80 people attended the memorial service, including the Mayor of Gangseo District, members of the Gangseo District Council, the head of the Veterans Affairs Division at the Busan Regional Office of Veterans Affairs, the director of the Noksan Hyangto Culture Center, and local residents. The event was divided into two parts: the first part was a memorial ceremony, and the second part was the memorial service itself. The program included the national pledge, reading of the monument inscription, memorial addresses, greetings, singing of the Liberation Day song and three cheers for independence, offering of flowers, and a traditional memorial ritual.
The Noksan-dong Unknown Anti-Japanese Soldiers Memorial Monument was erected in 1995 to commemorate a young man who had been forcibly conscripted by the Japanese military and lost his life in Cheonyeo-gol, Jangrak Village, while attempting to escape from the Japanese forces on Gadeokdo just two hours before liberation on August 15, 1945.
The memorial monument is composed of a straight tower atop two round stones shaped like the number eight and five steps, symbolizing August 15, Liberation Day. It has been designated and is managed as a memorial facility by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
An official from the Busan Regional Office of Veterans Affairs stated, "As we mark the 80th anniversary of Liberation, we hope this memorial service will remind the public of the importance of our nation and the meaning of liberation, and especially serve as an opportunity to instill a proper sense of history in future generations."
